Deforestation concerns have prompted the EU to ban palm oil as biofuel by 2030. Small-scale farmers in Malaysia are up in arms about the EU’s decision as they say it could ruin their livelihoods. Experts have pointed out that switching from palm oil to other oils would not remove the issue of deforestation as alternatives such as oil from soy beans would also require land for cultivation.
